From Natural Gardens (pages 311-312): "Perennials, with purplish flowers solitary; perianth parts except lower petals much alike: leaves 1 or 2 on stem. Bogs and moist soil, chiefly eastern. Summer."; From Natural Gardens (page 312): "KEY TO SPECIES: Lower petal not bearded; generally over 1 ft. high. Sepals wide spreading."
