Built:

Bartley Holleman Road (Old Avent Ferry Road)
Community:
Holly Springs
State:
North Carolina
Zip:
27562
Historical note:
Holleman's Crossroads was originally called Enno Community, and is typical of the many thrifty farm communities formed in a prospering Wake County around 1840. Its soil was well-suited to cotton farming, which became the base of its economy. During the Civil War, the land served as a major Union camp. Around 1900 the community contained several stores, including Samuel Bartley Holleman's store and cotton gin, a post office, a public school with two teachers, and two active churches, including Bethel Christian Church. The cotton gin and a sawmill operated within the community, and a stone dam on Buckhorn Creek provided power for a gristmill in nearby Burt. By 1909, the leading agricultural role by tobacco was likely responsible for Enno's decline and eventual death After the mid-twentieth century, most buildings in the area disappeared leaving only the Holleman House and Collins Grove Baptist Church. Electricity was not brought to Holleman's Crossroads until 1945. Much of the land was owned by lumber companies and became covered with young pines.

Historical note:
The farmhouse was part of the Holleman's Crossroads community. Originally part of the Judd Estate, this group of buildings was begun in the early 1800's. Most of the outbuildings were built by the Welch family in the 1920's and consequently were not drawn. The oldest building (in the shaded circle) was the first meeting place of Collins Grove Baptist Church, the oldest currently active church in the area.
