View of upper barrel vault (an arched canopy known as the ombrellone)

Image description:
Above the pediment is the fa¿ade¿s most puzzling feature, that of an arched canopy known as the ombrellone. Although its precise purpose remains unclear, it certainly serves to reduce the amount of direct light entering the nave. This darkness accords with Alberti¿s expressed preference in De re aedificatoria (VII.xii) that churches should be dimly lit in order to concentrate the mind on the holy.
