Monumental building during the Hellenistic and Roman periods includes two impressive mausolea, the Tomb of Phalaris (2nd century BCE) and the Tomb of Theron (ca. 75 BCE), both Ionic structures with Doric decoration; the latter had a pyramidal roof comparable to North African funerary buildings of the 1st century BCE.
