Image description:

The black cape (tabarro) and tricorn hat were common 18th century costume; this combined with the bauta mask worn by males became a standardized society mask and disguise regulated by the Venetian government. The bauta was usually worn by men, but many paintings done in the 18th century also depict women wearing this mask and tricorn hat.
