Description
In honor of Monica's swing through north central Iowa, I'm posting five photos of our state park. This is the observation tower that was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC Boys) and is the second highest point in Iowa at 1,450 ft above sea level. It rises about 250 feet above the surrounding farmland.

Along the way we stopped back by the registration office to get a couple of maps and a coke. Inside they had some exhibits about the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp). In the prism of my readings what I saw was a bit chilling. The men employed in the CCC were not some massive, ideologically motivated youthful volunteer force. They were, in effect, economic refugees joined together and employed by the same government that could arguably be shown to have exacerbated the economic conditions that put them there. One should not forget these men had jobs and skills prior to their service in the CCC. Having said that, their work in the CCC cannot be overlooked nor trivialized. They worked hard and accomplished much. My own Grandfather served in their ranks. I merely hope that I was no

Cheaha State Park sits dramatically atop Alabama's highest point at 2,407 feet. The 2,719 acres of the park is surrounded by the much larger Talladega National Forest which comprises one of the prime wild areas in Alabama. Cheaha was established in 1939 and is one of the oldest state Parks in Alabama. The groundwork for the park began even earlier with the work of the Civilian Conservation Corp. Facilities at the Park include a restaurant-motel complex, rental chalets and cabins and both modern and primitive camping areas. There are numerous hiking trails, some of which lead to dramatic rock outcrops and cliffs which offer spectacular views. Connecting trails in the Talladega National Forest make this an excellent destination for serious backpackers as well as day hikers. There is also a

It's really one of the more disgusting sights you'll ever see, but also fascinating in a way. Nice symbiotic relationship: the carp back up at the spillway, people come feed them, more carp, more people feeding them, etc. My folks remember "feeding the carp" was already an attraction in the 1930s.

Description
Walasi-Yi Center – (pronounced Wa La See Yee), a Cherokee word for Frog Town, is a historical stone structure built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. This building was started in 1934 and completed in 1937, the same year as the completion of the Appalachian Trail. The trail itself passes through the Walasi-Yi Center marking the only covered portion of the Appalachian Trail’s 2100 plus miles. The Walasi-Yi Center is located in the Blood Mountain Archaeological area, site of Cherokee and Creek Indian Battle before the arrival of the white man.
